Leopold in critical condition

December 8, 1909

The Chicago Daily Tribune reports today that King Leopold II of the Belgians is in "a grave critical condition." He suffered a stroke last Friday, and a second stroke on Monday. The report was received in London from Brussels on "private advices" was contradicted by an official statement from the palace in Brussels.
"The King is afflicted with muscular rheumatism which is extremely painful, but today he was able to walk about his apartments."
Despite this contradiction, it "is known positively that his condition is causing the utmost anxiety."
The heir to the throne is the king's nephew, Prince Albert, as his only son, Leopold, died at the age of nine from pneumonia.
