Duke of Orleans has to move

June 9, 1899

"Owing to unpleasant police attentions at the behest of the government," the Duke of Orleans, who recently arrived at Genoa from Palermo on his yacht, the Maroussia, has to leave Italy, according to the Chicago Daily Tribune. He will now leave Genoa and cruise along the Riviera. The Italian government has order the police to patrol the western borders to make sure that the Duke, who is the heir to the former French throne, cannot re-enter the country.

In 1899, the Duke of Orleans(1869-1926) was the pretender to the French throne. His name was Philippe. He was the son of Philippe, the Count of Paris, and Princess Marie of Orleans. In 1896, Philippe married Archduchess Maria Dorothea of Austria. A very unhappy marriage, and much of the marriage, the couple lived apart. No children.
Philippe died in 1926 and was succeeded as head of the house and claimaint to the French throne by his cousin, Jean, Duke of Guise, who was also his brother-in-law (married to his sister, Isabelle).
